NEW: Waiting for another, 48"x60" acrylic on canvas

The composited image above is part of a series i want to kickstart—the idea of the kitchen as the heart of the home, but with a sinister twist.

NEW: Join me on the other side, 48"x60" acrylic on canvas

The "end of nature" exhibit i've mentioned weekly has received a lot of attention. it's a strong showing of work from artists locally and nationally. saturday, april 19, we held a poetry reading with bernard welt, judith mccombs, and nan fry. each of the poets read work from their favorite nature writers as well as some of their own. it made for a nicely-paced and interesting poetry reading.

pieces from a couple of nan fry poems have inspired me to paint something in reaction. in one, the poet gets a notice from an anthology to which she'd submitted work. the anthology was to be compiled by the Year of the Ocean Foundation, but due to lack of funds it was unable to print it. her piece, entitled Tell Them, was inspired by the note from the Foundation that ended with "the year of the ocean has officially come to an end." in her poem she says,

There will be no
wash of waves, no

crash of combers,
no plashing in tidal pools,
no cry of terns following
the fishing boats, no creaking
of pulleys, no flapping of sails,
only salt, pillars of salt
under a hot sun and a dry wind
and the moon, pulling and pulling
.

The image of pillars of salt, huge mountains of salt, oceans of salt, being pulled by the tidal forces of the moon inspires me. a landscape covered in dunes of salt flowing and moving as the moon watches on.

Images from my installation room, "we all fall down."
